Yellow gold is a traditional and popular choice for wedding rings, but there are other alternatives. Some people prefer the look of the white gold diamond wedding ring, and for good reason. White gold is just like yellow gold with a few differences. It is made by combining gold with a white metal. Examples of white metals include palladium, silver and nickel. In addition to containing a white metal, white gold is plated with rhodium. This is because in its unplated state, white gold is a greyish color and not nearly as beautiful. After being plated with rhodium, however, it becomes a beautiful shade of gleaming silver-white.

One of the only downsides to white gold is that the rhodium will wear off eventually and need to be replaced. This can be performed by a professional jeweler, usually for a reasonably affordable price. Depending on the level of wear and tear on your ring, re-plating will need to be done anywhere from once a year to once every several years. This is a simple process that shouldn't dissuade you from white gold if it is your preferred metal.
